Darikwa Relishing Right-Back Fight

Tendayi Darikwa says he is thriving off the high level of competition for places at Turf Moor ahead of the visit of MK Dons tonight.

Darikwa produced a man of the match display against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and is relishing the fight from fellow summer signing Matt Lowton for the right-back berth.

Lowton, who missed the opening six games of the campaign with a shin injury, was named on the bench against the Owls.

But Darikwa is fully focused on his own game in his bid to remain in the starting line-up.

“The pressure is on me at the moment to keep the shirt,” said the 23-year-old. “Matty’s more or less fully fit now and it’s going to be an interest competition throughout the season.

“It’s competition that I relish; I’m here to play games and obviously I know I’ve got to be on top of my game for that to happen.

“I believe it’s good to have competition for places at football clubs, I think it brings the best out of players.

“Sometimes you have to worry about yourself and do your best on the training pitch and hopefully the manager will put you in the team on a Saturday.”

The former Chesterfield man is concentrated on the visit of the Dons, a team he is familiar with after facing them four times with the Spireites last season.

“They’re a good footballing team,” he explained. “They’ll try and keep the ball and pass the ball and I think it’ll be an exciting game tomorrow.

“From my previous experience of playing against them they will come on the front foot and attack us so we’ve got to be switched on at the back.”

And Darikwa, who has played every minute of the season so far, believes the side are capable of recording a fourth straight league win.

“I think there will be a lot of chances in the game and hopefully we can come out on top.

“Obviously for us we’ve got a bit of momentum going now and hopefully we can take it into tomorrow’s game and get the three points.”
